Capito and Manchin Announce ARC Funding for New River Gorge Regional Development


WASHINGTON DC — U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (RW.Va.), a ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, and Joe Manchin (DW.Va.), both members of the Senate Appropriations Committee , announced today the new River La Gorge Regional Development Authority in Beckley will receive $250,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to help implement its outdoor recreation industry planning strategy , Dynamic Economies and Regional Strategy (RIVERS).

“The re-designation of the New River Gorge National River as a National Park and Reserve has increased the need to invest more in our outdoor recreation economy to ensure we can meet the demand created by these new visitors. The New River Gorge Regional Development Authority is doing a fantastic job ensuring the region is ripe for economic growth so that visitors from around the world can continue to appreciate how wild and wonderful our state is,” said ranking member Capito. “I am especially thrilled that the Outdoor RIVERS strategy being funded has the potential to create hundreds, if not thousands, of new jobs in West Virginia. The ARC, which is overseen by my EPW Committee, continues to be a valuable federal contributor to our state’s growing recreation industry.

“West Virginia is home to stunning public lands that attract tourists from around the world to experience the beauty of the Mountain State through hiking, biking, rafting, rock climbing and more. I am pleased that ARC is investing in the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority to help create well-paying jobs and boost our tourism and recreation industry in the region.
