The Trans Canada Trail, which showcases Canada’s incredibly diverse and unique landscapes and cultures, launches its second annual Great Canadian Hike. From September 15 to October 31, the Great Canadian Hike is a national challenge that aims to inspire people to get out into nature and explore local trails with their friends, family and fellow Canadians.
This year, the Trans Canada Trail invites Canadians across the country to disconnect from their screens and reconnect with nature and, most importantly, with each other by collectively enjoying a total of 28,000 hours out of the 28 000 km (17,398 miles) of Canada’s National Trail. Whether you choose to walk, walk, run, jump, paddle, ride, walk or cycle, the Great Canadian Hike is the perfect antidote to the social isolation caused by COVID-19.
“The ongoing pandemic has caused prolonged stress levels in our lives and has taken a toll on our mental health. The fact that access to nature and to physical and social activity contribute to improving mental health means that time spent on the Trail is time well spent: an investment in our health and well-being ”, a said Eleanor McMahon, President and CEO, Trans Canada Trail. “I invite everyone across the country to join the Great Canadian Trail. Securely reconnect with loved ones and share stories, enjoy Canada’s natural wonders, help us create a larger connection experience that transcends the boundaries of your local community, ”adds McMahon.
At last year’s inaugural Great Canadian Walk, more than 10,000 Canadians took on the challenge of collective trekking the Trans-Canada Trail and covered a combined distance of 108,000 km (67,108 miles), which is equivalent to nearly three times the earth’s circumference distance!
New this year, participants can win great prizes when they recommend friends and family to join the Great Canadian Trail.
Here’s what you need to know about how to join the Great Canadian Trail:
- Visit GreatCanadianHike.ca and register. Register for free for a chance to win weekly prizes. Set your personal time goal on the Trail. Commit to walking, walking, jumping, jumping, dancing, running, biking, rolling, paddling or biking – or any combination of activities – the choice is yours! Every second, minute or hour that you log on to the Trail while reconnecting with friends and family this fall gets closer to the collective goal of 28,000 hours of time on the Trail.
- Find your local trail. Explore the map to find a section of trail near you and decide where you want to hike. Check out the featured hikes for inspiration!
- Refer a friend. Invite a friend to join you on your great Canadian hike! For each sponsorship you will get an additional entry into the raffle for a chance to win fantastic weekly prizes and be entered into the grand prize draw.
- Share for a chance to win. After each outing, share photos or videos of your adventures on the Trail. Each photo or video submission entitles you to one additional entry for even more chances to win prizes. Upload media from the website or share it on social media using the hashtag #GreatCanadianHike to participate. The Great Canadian Backpacker Promotion Toolkit contains sample social media posts and images that you can share on your social media platforms.
