Strong signs of desire to travel the world: long weekends, short stays, local experiences
According to his data on travel preferences in different geographies, in the UK there is a strong preference for travel over short weekends, followed by school vacations and business trips. Americans, on the other hand, choose to explore local destinations and new experiences, followed by solo travel. It is also noted that in the United States, hygiene and cleanliness are a top priority for travelers.
When it comes to Southeast Asia, with partly relaxing lockdowns in Indonesia, there is a surge in SMEs and essential travel in business cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, among others. In Malaysia, the company has seen an increase in searches for local tourist destinations such as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. As the lockdown continues in Malaysia, increased research points to people’s aspirations to travel once the country opens up to tourists.
In India, Goa, followed by Jaipur and Manali, are expected to become India’s top leisure destinations for the upcoming holiday season. Reservation data shows a clear tilt towards hill stations, followed by heritage towns and beach destinations.

In India, Goa, Jaipur, followed by the hill stations of Manali, Ooty and Mysore are the most popular leisure destinations for travelers. According to the OYO consumer survey, 37% of travelers have a preference for mountains, 33% for beaches in India. The remaining 14 percent prefer to visit places suitable for vehicles (or road trips), followed by heritage towns and pilgrimages. In India, vaccinated staff and disinfection protocols at properties are the two main factors that consumers keep in mind when deciding on their next travel destination and accommodation.
During the Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi long weekends, bookings for leisure destinations increased. Ganesh Chaturthi’s travel demand was mainly driven by Jaipur, Pondicherry, Ooty and Mysore. For Dussehra and Guru Nanak Jayanti’s upcoming long weekend, data shows travelers are opting to vacation in India’s leisure destinations – with Jaipur at the top of the list, followed by beautiful Goa beaches.
It is also noted that approx. 57% of travelers prefer to make reservations closer to the day of travel. This is a stark change from the pre-COVID era, when travel was largely planned and reservations were made weeks or even months in advance.
According to its booking data by area, Goa is the most popular travel hotspot in the west, while the Himalayan hill station of Manali is one of the favorites in northern India. Across South India, the royal city of Mysore tops the rankings as the most popular vacation destination. Nestled among the mountains, Darjeeling has become the preferred destination for leisure travelers in North East India.

In the UK, the company’s booking trends for September reveal that Britons are heading to the capital London, followed by Bath, a wellness destination, best known for its magnificent ancient Roman Baths. Britons also head to tourist hotspots such as Blackpool, Scotland and Great Yarmouth. Blackpool and Great Yarmouth are essentially seaside resorts, while Scotland is famous for its scenic highlands and mountains. According to UK advance bookings trends, Christmas, New Years, Black Friday and Boxing Day are the most popular long weekends for Britons to travel.

In the United States, large cities and coasts dominate travel preferences. As travel opens up across the country, Americans head to New York, Hawaii (3 islands), Las Vegas, Orlando and Key West. Spontaneous travel plans, summer and more – this is how Europeans travel
According to its booking data between August and September 2021, Europe saw strong signs of a rebound in travel led by summer travel demand. Across Europe, the Baltic Sea region of Germany, a popular vacation spot (also known as the German Riviera) was the most booked destination during the summer season. Next come the sandy seaside town of Blavand in Denmark, North Holland in the Netherlands, Luxembourg in Belgium and Salzburg in Austria.
Based on its advanced booking data between October and December 2021, Europeans plan their trip around the upcoming autumn holidays in October and Christmas week. Data shows that during the Christmas week of December 25, Salzburg and Tyrol in Austria are the most booked destinations. As the autumn holidays approach, Europeans are heading for Blavand and North Holland. While some users have planned their trip with reservations in advance, over the past month OYO has observed that a majority of reservations are last minute (reservations within 15 days of arrival) across the Europe, indicating the shift in consumer mindset, in which consumers plan their travel closer to date, largely based on factors surrounding the pandemic.
